Your residency

Live in Dubai in your own name, without setting up a company.

You get your UAE residence visa, valid across the country, and the right to work and invoice in your own name as a self-employed professional, without setting up a company. In a 0% income tax framework.

We handle the whole process; you focus on your clients.

Free zone (RAKEZ) used: Ras Al Khaimah, an hour from Dubai; the lowest entry cost, and a visa valid across all the Emirates.

In your own name

The freelance permit lets you work and invoice under your birth name, without setting up a company. You get paid into a personal bank account, opened once your Emirates ID and your visa are active.

Residence visa & family

Your permit sponsors your residence visa (1–2 years depending on the pack), renewable. Once resident, you can sponsor your spouse and children from an income of 4,000 AED per month (or 3,000 AED with accommodation provided), evidenced by your statements.

The lowest entry cost

The freelance permit is the cheapest gateway to UAE residency: no share capital, no dedicated office, a shared workstation (flexi desk) is enough to provide the address and open up the right to a visa.

UAE taxation

0% on your freelance income

The UAE does not tax personal income: 0% on your freelance earnings. Corporate tax only concerns you if your revenue exceeds 1,000,000 AED per year.

* As a self-employed professional, you only fall within the scope of corporate tax if your business revenue exceeds 1,000,000 AED per year; above that, taxable profit is taxed at 0% up to 375,000 AED and then at 9%. The 0% rate reserved for the "qualifying income" of a free zone is not available to a freelance permit: it requires a company. VAT (5%) only becomes mandatory above 375,000 AED of taxable revenue per year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the freelance permit give a right to a residence visa?
Yes. The freelance permit entitles you to a UAE residence visa, sponsored by your own permit. It allows only one (yours): no additional visa, and no employees.
Why does your price differ from the one advertised by the free zone?
The headline price published by the free zone covers the permit alone, without a residence visa: a document that allows the activity, but does not let you live in the UAE. To obtain residency, you have to add pre-approval, registration with the immigration system, the residence visa itself, the change of status, mandatory health insurance and the Emirates ID. In practice, the real cost of going direct is more than double the headline price; every fee has to be fronted yourself, in the right order. Our pack includes all of these fees, plus end-to-end support: you know the total amount before you start.
Which activities are eligible?
Mostly individual professions: media and content, education and training, consulting, technology, marketing and advertising, art and creative work. You choose one activity per permit; some regulated professions require prior approval.
Will I pay tax as a freelancer?
The UAE does not tax personal income: 0% on your freelance earnings. You only fall within the scope of corporate tax if your business revenue exceeds 1,000,000 AED per year; above that, profit is taxed at 0% up to 375,000 AED and then at 9%. The 0% rate reserved for qualifying income in a free zone is not available to a freelance permit (it requires a company).
Can I open a business bank account?
No: the freelance permit does not allow you to open a business bank account. You invoice and get paid through a personal bank account, opened once your Emirates ID and your residence visa are active. For a business account, you need a company.
How long does it take to get my visa?
The permit itself is issued within a few days. The residence visa (entry permit, medical test, Emirates ID, biometrics) then takes 2 to 6 weeks depending on your situation: a change of status on site is faster than an application from abroad. These are observed timeframes, not guaranteed.
Can I bring my family over?
Yes, once resident. You can sponsor your spouse and children if your income reaches 4,000 AED per month (or 3,000 AED with accommodation provided). For a self-employed professional, that income is assessed on your bank statements and your declared income. The dependent visa is one of the options in your quote.
Which documents do I need to provide?
A copy of your passport, proof of competence (a portfolio of work or an attested degree related to your activity), and a no-objection certificate (NOC) from your current sponsor if you already live in the UAE. If your degree does not match the activity exactly, a letter attesting to at least five years of experience may be requested.
What is the difference with setting up a company?
The freelance permit is the cheapest solo route: one visa, working in your own name, no company to run. If you need several visas, a trade name, to hire or a business bank account, you need a company: see our entrepreneur route. Moving from one to the other means cancelling the freelance permit in order to set up the company.
Why do you talk about Ras Al Khaimah and not just Dubai?
The free zone we use, RAKEZ, is in Ras Al Khaimah, one of the seven Emirates, about an hour's drive from Dubai. You get a lower entry cost while staying right next to the Dubai hub: your residence visa is valid across all the Emirates.
Can BlueVisa handle the entire process?
Yes. We take care of issuing the freelance permit, opening the immigration file, the visa application, coordinating the formalities on site and the banking introduction. You provide the information, and we manage the whole process.
What about my crypto or tradfi activities?
These activities are handled personally, in your own name; separately from your residence permit. The UAE does not tax the income of individuals: gains you make personally (trading, stock markets, capital gains, including in cryptocurrencies) are not taxed (0%). The only practical caveat: banks classify crypto profiles as "high risk", so opening an account goes through enhanced checks (KYC); it is workable, and we point you to the right institutions.
