Ultra-light administration

Forget the burden of company statutes, corporate secretaries and complex audits. You operate in your own name (Sole Proprietorship). Your accounting is kept as simple as possible.

Progressive income thresholds

The EDB requires turnover of Rs 2M (~USD 44,000) from year 3, then Rs 3M (~USD 66,000) from year 5. Demanding but clear thresholds, based on your business income (not a salary).

Family included

Despite this simplified status, you keep every privilege: a 10-year visa for you, your spouse and your children, plus full access to the local and international market.

Simplified taxation

More net in your pocket

No CSG/CRDS, no heavy social charges.

"The Self-Employed process was surprisingly fast. Within 2 months I was settled in Grand Baie. The time zone is perfect for my French clients (only 2 or 3 hours' difference)."

"I was worried about the administrative complexity. In the end, the self-employed status is very light. I invoice my clients in Europe with no VAT, and the low, progressive income tax here is unbeatable."

"We came as a family. The fact that the Self-Employed status also covers the spouse and children for 10 years was decisive. The international schools here are excellent."

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the self-employed permit in Mauritius?
A self-employment work permit designed to carry out a services activity on your own. It is neither a company, nor a team, nor a retail business.
What is the minimum investment?
USD 50,000, simply transferred to your personal bank account in Mauritius within 60 days. The funds remain fully available and free for you to use.
Which types of activity are accepted?
Only intellectual or digital services: consulting, IT and development, marketing and design, coaching and training, remote services or international freelancing. You sell your personal expertise, not a structure.
Which activities are not allowed?
Any regulated or physical activity, or one that requires staff: medical, catering, physical retail, construction, crafts, spa or salon. In those cases, the investor permit is mandatory.
Do I have to prove I have clients?
Yes. A minimum of three letters of intent is required, including two from Mauritian clients.
Can I hire staff?
The Self-Employed status only allows you to recruit one local administrative employee.
Do I have to set up a company?
It is not mandatory. You can operate in your own name or as a one-person company, whichever best suits your activity.
How long is the permit valid?
The permit is issued for a period of 10 years, renewable provided you have met the turnover criteria set by the EDB: Rs 2M (~USD 44,000) from year 3, then Rs 3M (~USD 66,000) from year 5. Permits already issued are assessed against the previous criteria at their first renewal.
Is it suitable for digital nomads?
It is currently the best long-term visa for freelancers looking to settle in Mauritius for good.
How does BlueVisa support you?
We prepare your entire file: a compliant business plan, client letters, structuring your activity and a complete submission. You have no paperwork to handle.
